Most microbladers offer a free consultation either in person, over video chat, or over the phone. Even if you’re about to go into your first appointment, it’s not too late to ask the below questions and get the heck out of there if the answers are not up to standard!

1. What are your microblading credentials?

When you speak to a microblading artist, ask for their credentials. You should be looking for someone who has a license from the State Department of Health. The process that a legitimate microblading artist goes through before receiving their license is:

• training with either the American Academy of Micropigmentation (AAM), the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals (SPCP), or an approved instructor found on either of the AAM or SPCP website
• finishing 100+ hours of training as an apprentice
• completing the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (BPS) certificate test, which proves they’ve studied and learned how to operate with needles according to OSHA standards
• completing either the AAM or SPCP certificate test, which validates their 100+ hours of training and certifies them as theoretical experts

2. What is your preferred process for eyebrow shaping?

Microblading is using a needle to apply semi-permanent makeup to achieve a 3D look. In order for the application to achieve natural results, the artist has to have a vision for a good eyebrow shape. Shaping is not a science, it is an art. This process is not precise. The microblading artist has to know which hairs to add/keep in which places on the brow. Pick someone with years of shaping experience who can shape your brows so they look natural and enhance your natural features.

3. Would you want to change my arch?

A client – let’s call her Jane – had a beautiful natural shape. It was a flatter shape but was complimentary to her face and natural. Jane went to a microblading “professional” because she was sick of having to fill in her brows.

• The technician recommended that Jane agree to lift her arch
• The technician then waxed off Jane’s natural hair and microbladed a higher arch above her natural brow
• Jane tweezed the natural hair to upkeep her new higher arch
• When the semi permanent makeup faded, Jane’s higher arch was gone and SO WAS HER NATURAL HAIR. Because Jane tweezed where her old arch used to be, her hair stopped growing there
